Nightmare Kitchen

The Kitchen was probably the biggest headache of the whole build.  When we build back in 2005/6 Australia was so far behind in the DIY kitchens department. Back in the UK you could go into any DIY shop and pick off the shelves a really great kitchen, any design any door colour and you can even have any different colour carcases. But in Australia at the time you needed to employ a cabinet maker or a carpenter to make the kitchen for you.  Ikea had just arrived in Australia, but we didn’t like any of their kitchens.  We were lucky that Lee is a Painter with a Queensland Painters Licence because he could go to Laminex and buy cupboards and doors through them.  It was great but they weren’t normal flat packs that you can buy now in Bunnings or Masters, these were really for the trade, so when we started having problems, Laminex weren’t overly helpful.  Once again I had to spit the dummy to get a salesman out to us.  There was a lot wrong with the sizing, but the main problem was the larder.  The larder cupboard came in two sections but when we made it up the top section was bigger than the bottom section by about 2cm!  They said we could exchange it, but the second one was the same. After a lot of toing and froing they made one up especially for us.  Also Laminex made a base corner unit, but not a wall corner unit! So I had to buy a corner unit from Ikea and put a Laminex door on!  There were lots of other things I wanted but they were not standard here, so I had to have them made up in the Laminex colours, like the corner shelf unit and the under cupboard pelmet for the lighting.  I also couldn’t get under mounted sinks in Queensland Anyway! So I had to have them shipping up from Sydney.  If we were building now, we would have none of these problems as Bunnings and Masters have fabulous kitchen, tap ware and sinks.
